Electrocardiogram
Preventive Health Lab has the ability to perform a high quality EKG at a very reasonable price. An
electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is a recording of the electrical activity of the heart over time
produced by an electrocardiograph. This is a noninvasive recording performed using skin electrodes.
Its name consists of two parts: electro, because it is related to electrical activity, and cardio, Greek for
heart, the root word for "to write".
With each heartbeat, an electrical signal spreads from the top of the heart to the bottom. As it travels,
the signal causes the heart to contract and pump blood. The process repeats with each new
heartbeat. The heart's electrical signals set the rhythm of the heartbeat. These qualities of heart
function allow us to extract critical information in an attempt to preserve heart health.
An ECG can allow your doctor to do the following:
- Check the heart's electrical activity.
- Find the cause of unexplained chest pain, which could be caused by a heart attack,
inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart (pericarditis), or angina.
- Find the cause of symptoms of heart disease, such as shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting,
or rapid, irregular heartbeats (palpitations).
- Find out if the walls of the heart chambers are too thick (hypertrophied).
- Determine how well medicines are working and whether they are causing side effects that
affect the heart.
- Check how well mechanical devices that are implanted in the heart, such as pacemakers, are
working to control a normal heartbeat.
- Check the health of the heart when other diseases or conditions are present, such as high
blood pressure, high cholesterol, cigarette smoking, diabetes, or a family history of early heart
disease.
